And now she’s giving back.
A home is so much more than a roof and four walls. It’s a place where most of us find love and support, acceptance, and a sense of belonging. But sadly, some of the women we serve have never experienced that kind of home.
Breana was one of those young women. She had lived in many places—over 14 by the time she was a teenager. These included relatives’ houses, friends’ houses, group homes and foster homes. But Breana never felt deeply loved or like she belonged in any of them.
Things got even harder for her when Breana discovered at 17 that she was pregnant. Fortunately, the group home where she was staying knew about Care Net–and Breana moved into The Elizabeth House.
At The Elizabeth House, Breana found her first real home. She was able to finish her high school education through a program at Madison College. She gave birth to a beautiful son and was able to complete our program requirements in 2009. And then, for the first time, Breana moved into a home that was truly her own: a beautiful two-bedroom apartment.
Breana is determined to provide a very different life for her children than the one she had. Now a mom to three beautiful children, Breana runs a certified childcare business out of her home and her goal is to open her own free-standing childcare center. Breana has been diligently working on a degree in Early Childhood Education and is only six classes away from graduation.
Breana credits her experience in The Elizabeth House with helping her set long-term goals and putting her on the path to a better life. She is eager to give back to the community that made such a difference in her life and the lives of her children.
“The Elizabeth House helped me, providing a solid foundation, and strong support system. That’s something I never had before…The Elizabeth House remains my extended family,” said Breana.
Today Breana still stays in touch with The Elizabeth House staff and we are thrilled that she is now serving on The Elizabeth House Advisory Council. Breana offers a unique and caring perspective that bolsters moms entering this safe and nurturing home.
Because of you, Breana has grown into the successful and confident mom and business woman she is today. Thank you for helping Breana and for making it possible for her to help other pregnant moms who are in need of a safe place and a real home.
