Nowhere to turn—until God opened the door

See how you helped Bee get the help she prayed for

Bee was scared and at her lowest. Nearly ready to deliver her baby, alone and living in a hotel she couldn’t afford, she was desperate and had no one to turn to for support. After growing up in an unstable home, where abuse was rampant and emotional tensions were high, Bee wanted something more for her son. Something better. A place where both of them could do more than just survive day-to-day.

Growing up in Jamaica, things had been hard, and the abuse unbearable. As a young teen, Bee moved to the United States and became responsible for feeding and clothing herself. Seen as the “black sheep” of the family, Bee often looked to find love but looked for it in all the wrong places. She eventually decided that she was going to make a way for herself and took a series of nannying and caregiving jobs all over the United States, moving back to Jamaica every six months or so when she had nowhere else to go.

Then in the beginning of 2024, Bee’s chaotic life took an unexpected turn. She realized she was unexpectedly pregnant.

A cousin allowed her to rent a room from her. But what she thought would be a helpful situation quickly turned out to be something very different. Bee found herself once again in unhealthy, dangerous circumstances. She asked her mother if she could live with her, but she was told, “This is your problem. Move into a hotel. You got yourself pregnant.”

Bee spent all of her remaining funds at a hotel and cried out to God. She knew something had to change.

After a Google search, Bee found The Elizabeth House and called to inquire. “I wasn’t going to have enough money to stay in a hotel for one more day,” remembered Bee. “I would be out on the street by Saturday. And then I got the call that I could move in.”

From there, things moved quickly. Two days later, she was in labor.

What started out as a very stressful situation resulted in perfectly timed divine intervention. Her baby boy arrived on Thanksgiving Day. “I thought, ‘I am in heaven,’ when I came here,” said Bee. “My first impression was that they really were going to push me forward with my goals and make this a better place for me and my son. And they have.”

Bee is grateful to live at The Elizabeth House, citing all she’s learned and the support she’s received with budgeting, finding a job, parenting education, and more. She is especially grateful for the impact The Elizabeth House has on her faith.  “Since being here, I have grown in my faith,” she shared. “You get up knowing you start your day with a devotion. You start your day with God, and that’s the most important thing to do. This is a great place for you to be if you are willing to change your ways.”

Although much of Bee’s life has been filled with difficulties and trials, she recognizes that it’s made her who she is today and is excited about her future.

“I am happy I am here; I am glad I get the chance to pull myself together,” said Bee. I hope that God never lets the fruit basket go dry here, and I thank God for this opportunity.”

Today, Bee is busy as a new mom and working on completing her GED. Next, she hopes to go into the Army. She is making strides and piecing together a plan for her family’s future. “They are telling me the Army training will be hard, but I know I can make it through because I was born a soldier,” declared Bee. “After everything I’ve been through, I am ready, and I know I can do it.”
